The formal yearbook portrait and cap and gown portraits are classics.  We provide the attire for these portraits, but you will still need to bring some crucial items:

If you plan on wearing the tuxedo:

  • A white undershirt (to wear underneath the formal tuxedo that we provide). If you do not bring this with you, we cannot photograph your formal portrait and you will have to reschedule.
  • A white dress shirt and a tie to wear with your school's cap and gown.

If you plan on wearing the drape:

  • A strapless shirt or tank top (to wear underneath the formal drape that we provide). If you do not bring this with you, we cannot photograph your formal portrait and you will have to reschedule.
  • A shirt or outfit with an open neckline to wear with your school's cap and gown.
  • Jewelry.  Pearls are traditional, but a simple necklace is lovely as well.

The majority of your senior portrait session is casual portraits.  This is meant to showcase you and your current style! Keep the following in mind while planning your outfits:

  • You will need to bring at least one casual outfit. All of our contracted schools include a casual portrait in the yearbook!  The number of outfits you bring depends on what session you have selected:

The Basic, The Essential, or The Summer Mini: One outfit

The Tailormade,  The June Special, or The July Special: Two outfits

The Ultimate: Three outfits

  • Simplicity is always best, so when in doubt keep in mind that “less is more”.
  • Consider bringing your favorite outfit, whatever that may be!
  • Wear clothing that fits properly.  A proper fit that allows you to move and feel comfortable will help you look more confident in your portrait.  Try on your outfits before you come to your session and take note of whether or not you feel like it flatters you.  If you have to tug, pull, or readjust consistently, we don't recommend that you wear it.
  • Always dress with full-length in mind.  Include shoes and socks in your wardrobe consideration. Shoe styles should be simple and complementary.

You will feel more confident in front of the camera if you are groomed and ready for anything!

  • It is important that you are well-rested the day of your session. You want you to look your best, and getting enough sleep the night before is a good first step.
  • Give yourself extra time to get ready the day of the session so that you do not feel rushed.  Managing your time the day of your session will allow you to look the way you want in your portraits.
  • Apply makeup and style your hair as you normally would. Now is not the time to try out a new haircut or a new style of make-up that you aren’t comfortable with.  We recommend professional makeup application or hair styling, however it is not a requirement.  Just make sure your best features are defined.
  • Make sure to get your nails manicured (if that is your thing)!  Your hands will show in these portraits!  If choosing color for your nails, a nude or neutral color is best.
  • We recommend against going for a professional tan or intentionally tanning outdoors prior to your session. A fresh tan may look good in person but the camera is more sensitive to skin tones and your natural color is always more flattering in photographs.

FAQ

We always photograph the formal yearbook portrait first, when you are your freshest.  If you are not already dressed in the items you need to wear underneath the formal attire, we will have you change.  After you double-check your appearance, you will enter the formal portrait area and commence being photographed.  Your photographer will give you all the instructions for this very traditional portrait, so don't worry!

TIP #1: If you have any concerns or preferences, be sure to communicate that to the photographer!  This could include your "preferred side" or your desire to smile without your teeth - anything that you would want us to know!

TIP #2: Studio lights will accentuate shine on the face or fuzzy hair texture.  Come prepared with powder or blotting papers, hair product, or anything else that will help you feel more confident!

FAQ

Your photographer will consult with you to see what clothing and props you have brought with you.  This will help them plan where to photograph each portrait, as your session is tailored to you!  We photograph the casual portraits both inside our studio and outside in the surrounding area.  Definitely take a look at the examples under "Step 3: Location Information"!

TIP #1: We walk A LOT during sessions between portrait locations.  If you are planning on wearing shoes that are not very comfortable, bring sandals to walk in.  You can change shoes when you get to your portrait's location!

TIP #2: Bring something to drink!  We have water available as well.

TIP #3: Don't be afraid to show us some examples of what you like. Sometimes it is hard to articulate how you want to pose or how you want a picture of you to look. Save some examples on your phone and show them to your photographer before you get started.

TIP #1: If you plan on wearing a tie in this portrait, coordinate it with your school's colors.  The look will be much more cohesive.

TIP #2: The cap will be on  your head for this portrait.  If you feel like you will have difficulty positioning it on your head, bring hair pins with you!
